High Adventure

Philmont’s signature program is the High-Adventure Expedition. Available each summer from early June to late August, each 12-day expedition provides opportunities for participants to:

  • – Explore the high country in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico.
  • – Experience the thrill of climbing mountains over two miles high.
  • – Participate in a wide array of activities that teach Scouting skills—archaeology, climbing, fishing, forestry, horsemanship, Indian lore, and much more.
  • – Develop leadership, group dynamics, wilderness problem-solving, and outdoor skills.
  •
The Baltimore Area Council sends a contingent to Philmont each summer, typically in early July.  Council Contingent crew slots are available by application on a first-come, first-served basis. Units can request multiple crew slots in the Council contingent. Applications are accepted in February of the year prior to your Philmont trek by emailing Andrew Lupus at alupus@baltimorebsa.org.

Why Fly with Council?

Planning your trip to Philmont with Council is a great way to eliminate the hassle of travel and logistical planning. In addition to sharing the camaraderie and best practices of troops and crews around the Council, going with the Council provides you with training resources and financial protections in case of emergencies or cancellations.  Your Council contingent provides your Philmont registration, air travel, bus, and tour arrangements including hotel and sightseeing, a Contingent uniform and duffle, and training.

Council Contingents:

A portion of the Council’s Contingent crew slots are allocated to Boy Scout and Venturing units who wish to send an entire crew of 8-12 members to Philmont. Each Philmont expedition or group must have at least two BSA registered adult advisers for Scout groups. Two advisers must be at least 21 years of age. There must be a registered female adult leader over 21 in every unit serving females. Units with at least 8 participants can apply for these slots now.

Individual Scouts:

The Baltimore Area Council provides opportunities for individual Scouts to join existing Philmont crews from our Council contingent that are seeking additional youth. Whenever possible, a youth is placed in a contingent crew that is close to his/her own Scouting district to facilitate crew meetings and shakedowns, and provisional youth are also matched to crews by age and backpacking experience if possible. If multiple Scouts from the same unit want to attend Philmont, they will be placed in a crew together. Youth must be 14 years of age by the time they arrive at Philmont OR 13 years of age and have completed the 8th grade by 7/9/24.
